Gamification

Evaluation / Learning Through Games

Playing games is an important part of human development because they act as model of typical larger scale, real-world activities where learning takes place in a safe manner to be applied to functional learning. Games not only provide venues for both learning about cultural and social life but they are also a means for assuaging internal conflicts that arise during socialization.  Because of the real world simulation that gaming provides many schools, organizations and companies have started looking into utilizing game play as a method of learning about themselves and the people involved.

One of the most notable examples of using board games to teach and evaluate is the CIA. The proliferation of board games over the last twenty years means that there are a huge variety of game types that engage strategic, social and critical-thinking.  Each of these different varieties can be used to teach, educate and evaluate individuals.

Gamification In Business

It is becoming more challenging to engage employees who are looking for more out of their job than just a paycheck.  The current crop of workers are looking for opportunities to learn and grow and they don't want the same old training seminars. They grew up with games and technology as part of their lives and can find better common ground with games for learning. This is where Gamification comes into play. Gamifications means game mechanics applied to non-game environments such as work or marketing.  But applying game terms to business processes alone won't get positive results, the application of it needs to tie to important and relevant metrics to reach strategic objectives. Gamification works best when it can be coupled to productivity metrics and is used to drive desired behavior.
